Everything needs a cause — except the universe
THE CLAIM
"Who created God?" is used to reject a first cause.
THE TENSION
The same objection is not applied to the universe or the multiverse, which is allowed to be eternal or uncaused. Either an uncaused reality is possible, or it is not.
Objective morality is denied, yet used
THE CLAIM
Morality is described as evolved, subjective and cultural.
THE TENSION
Religion is then condemned as objectively evil. A condemnation that binds others requires the very standard that has just been denied.
Only what is testable is real
THE CLAIM
Belief should rest on empirical evidence alone.
THE TENSION
That statement itself cannot be tested empirically. It is a philosophical commitment held on the same footing it rules out for others.
A lack of belief, but a certainty in practice
THE CLAIM
Atheism is defined as merely withholding belief, carrying no burden of proof.
THE TENSION
It is regularly defended with positive claims — that the universe is self-caused, that mind arises from matter — which do carry a burden of proof.
Free thought from an unfree brain
THE CLAIM
The mind is fully the product of physical processes, and free will is an illusion.
THE TENSION
Believers are still blamed for being irrational and praised for "thinking for themselves". Blame and praise assume the freedom just denied.
No purpose, yet purpose is preached
THE CLAIM
The universe is indifferent; life has no inherent meaning.
THE TENSION
Deep moral urgency about justice, climate and human rights follows. Meaning is lived as real while being described as invented.
Trusting reason produced by survival
THE CLAIM
Human cognition was shaped by natural selection for survival, not truth.
THE TENSION
Total confidence is then placed in that same cognition to reach ultimate truths about reality — a point pressed by Plantinga and conceded by Darwin himself.
Religion blamed, ideology excused
THE CLAIM
Religion is named as the leading cause of violence in history.
THE TENSION
The explicitly atheistic regimes of the twentieth century are attributed to politics rather than belief. One standard is applied to religion and another to its alternatives.
